You'd better put your “coat” on...

It’s cold outside. The jury is still out on determining the coat type on Bijou’s puppies. Boone is definitely starting to look like a silky/soft-wirehaired and the other three are showing some signs... maybe one more week will tell. In the meantime, there has been a lot of discussion on Facebook about the silky/soft-wirehaired coat. Are we ruining the longhaired coat or the wirehaired coat by breeding for a silky/soft-wirehaired? What are your thoughts?

In a recent Facebook post, my response to some of that discussion was as follows:

“Dachshund Hall has specialized in AKC miniature longhaired dachshunds since 1991, with an emphasis on the creams. Our goal has always been to breed dogs that properly represent the breed standard whether they are going to be a family pet or a celebrated champion in the ring. Good conformation, excellent health, beauty and socialization are at the top of our list, and we take great pride in educating all of our "Dachshundhallic" customers about the breed. Many have come back for second, third and fourth puppies from us! Bijou is our first silky/soft-wirehaired dachshund and yes her coat type is not recognized in the breed standard. However, she is AKC registered and all that have seen and met her, want her. I really don't see it as "messing with the coat dachshunds are supposed to have" - quite the opposite. We are adding another marketable option, if you will, to our breeding program that combines the laid-back temperament of the longhaired with the clown-like personality of the wirehaired, and producing a stunning blend of both coats! Best of all, they make great family pets, and they are still 100% DACHSHUND! We don't sell them for more or as "rare coated" we sell them as what they are - a blend of a longhaired and wirehaired, period. Who's to say you won't see a fourth coat type for the dachshund in the hound group ring someday for the best breed around? For the record, I am strongly opposed to mixing breeds like dorkies, chiweenies, and one of the worst I've seen a dachsador! Yes, a dachsador from a "breeder" here in Texas. That truly messes up the breed. However, on the flip side, remember that through the ages every breed of dog out there was created from a blend of many dogs. They were all bred to do different things, hunt, herd, retrieve, etc. The smooth dachshund may have been the original but, longhaired dachshunds have spaniel in them and wirehaireds have terrier in them. Look at the popularity of Goldendoodles and Labradoodles. We had a goldendoodle that was a wonderful smart dog.”
